You can buy RO water at the store. First place that comes to mind is Wal-mart. They have self-serve water dispensers in most Wal-mart stores that offers filtered RO water; it’s around 40 cents per gallon here.
You could also buy your own RO water filter…. but they’re quite expensive.
Honestly, conditioned tap water will be fine for your shrimp. If you wanted to switch to RO, you’d also have to buy a mineral replacement to put in the water. I wouldn’t bother with this unless your tap water is bad.
RO water? reverse osmosis? what????
whats wrong with TWWC ( tap water with conditioner )
add conditioner and aquarium salts
Shrimp don’t really thrive in RO water. It’s only advantage is if you’re keeping softwater shrimp (like Crystal Reds, for example) and your normal water source is too hard. If you’re keeping shrimp that prefer hard, alkaline conditions (like Cherries), RO water would actually be detrimental.
But either way, if you want RO water, you would need to purchase a reverse osmosis unit, which will generally cost you at least $100 and needs to have it’s filters regularly replaced.
I buy ro/di water for 50 cents a gallon. It’s all I use for my saltwater tank (for water changes and to top off) and 2 years alter no unsightly algae. Just nice purple/pink coraline.
