Why does reverse osmosis water taste so different?

I just installed an RO water unit, and emptied it 3 times already. But when I drink the water, it tastes very different. Its actually not a very desirable taste for water. It tastes almost metallic like, any ideas?
Edit: the taste resembles Aquafina bottled water.
Edit: is there any way to get rid of this taste without having to use a different type of filtration.

How well do cichlids handle soft water?

I’m looking to get a few lake Tanganyikan cichlids for my tank but it is currently filled with soft water. I currently have a few tiger barbs in there just to get my tank cycled and will be removing them to start up another tank with. I was planning on slowly adding hard or RO water to the tank once I got the new fish. So how does soft water effect them?

can i use a home water pressure tank for my ro system?

i put in a ro water system for my reef aquariums last year> But now i have upgraded all my tanks and gotten bigger!! My system is still capable of producing enough water but i have no way to store it! There is a 2 gal pressure tank on it and i have a 30 that was given to me and was wandering if it was possible to use it for the system???
So just down size the fitting to fit the line from the RO and hook it up. I dont have to change the pressure in the tank or anything

How to raise the KH of RO-water.?

Hello :)

Just wondering what’s the best way of raising the KH of reverse osmosis water?

I have been using some "sera mineral salt" for hardening the water, and using "sera kh/pH-plus" for raising the KH, but I find that I can’t get the KH high enough as the pH gets too high.

The pH of my RO water is perfect so I just want to raise the KH so it stays that way, this stuff raises the pH too.

I read about using like baking soda, which is a nice cheap option, but when I went to the cooking drawer in the kitchen, we had:

"Baking Powder" and "Bicarbonate of Soda"

I am guessing I will be using the latter, but just want to make sure.

Just so you know – the baking soda contains:
• Wheat flour
• Raising agents: Disodium diphosphate, Sodium hydrogen carbonate

The bicarbonate of soda only has bicarbonate of soda in it.

Also, how much would I add to raise the kH by…say 1dKH?

Thanks
Thanks for all the great replies! :D

Firstly, as for raising my GH – I don’t need to, and as I mentioned I am using "sera mineral salts" to do this.

As for raising my KH, I have solved my problem.
Using "sera KH/pH-plus" I used to only raise the KH a little before the pH was getting to high. This was my problem.

I have solved it by simply shaking the bottle before hand xD

I feel a little silly that I didn’t shake it before, but now I get a KH of about 6/7 and a pH of 7.5 which is pretty much perfect for me.

Thanks for the interesting responses re. the bicarbonate of soda, and if I am in a sticky situation I know I can always resort to that if need be.

Thanks again,

Freshwater Aquarium – Reverse Osmosis System?

I am setting up a new 55 gallon freshwater aquarium. I live in an area where the supply water has a high degree of hardness. Is it worthwhile for me to invest in a RO water purifier for my aquarium needs? What are some of the things I need to keep in mind in selecting one? What are some good brands?
The aquarium that I am setting up now is for goldfish, but I will be setting up another one for tropical fish soon. So I will be sharing the RO system between the two.
